Thomas Schreiber Software developer
I consider myself a critical thinker with an eye for design. I am currently apprenticing as a software architect in the area of web application development. I take pride and enjoyment from my work by purposefully setting a high standard of excellence in the software I deliver.
I pursue a balance of research and productivity and enjoy studying and practicing new technologies and techniques as well as broadening my understanding of those with which I'm already familiar. My current tools of choice are Python, Django, JavaScript and more recently Emacs and Arch Linux. I also hold an interest in the Agile and Software Craftsmanship movements.
Currently I am working for Unidad Editorial as a lead web developer on social networking projects, living in Madrid and learning Spanish. I contribute to open source projects whenever possible and have a variety of personal projects under development. I enjoy djing, collecting vinyl, composing music and promoting the grass roots music scene all the same.
My interest in computers was triggered at the age of 12 when I was given an assignment to write a BASIC animation. A couple years later I selected parts from a catalogue and built my first computer so that I could play with the early Internet; at that time BBS and subsequently Prodigy and AOL. My interest in electronic music was also sparked in this time period, initially by writing MIDI files for fun.
When it was time for college I began with an Associates Degree in Computer Science from Northampton College and subsequently earned a Bachelors of Arts in Digital Media from Temple University's Tyler School of Art. The combination of these two degrees and my intensive post college programming work taught me the skills necessary to traverse the boundaries of creativity and engineering. I've since become a dedicated self-learner from which there is no turning back.
During my seven years in Philadelphia I took a large role in planting the seeds of the Detroit Techno inspired music scene, named rizumu, that continues its growth to this day. In addition to hundreds of dj nights in Philadelphia, I performed in many other American cities and a few Internationally. Musically, I've only scratched the surface of what I would like to accomplish.
Life is short, carpe diem.
